The Third Commandment
By David Wyper
"Thou Shalt not take the Name of the Lord Thy God in vain." What does this commandment mean to most people, especially people in the church? I submit they think it pertains to the use of the name of Jesus Christ, who is God, in anger and profanity. Yet, this has very little to do with God's directive, if anything.
That Hebrew word "take" means "to advance" or "suffer to bear". We should not attach the name of Jesus, God, to advance our own ideas and doctrines. We should not cause God to suffer to bear the association with our vanity.
"Vanity, vanity all is vanity," wrote Solomon. I listen to very important and powerful people, such as the Speaker of the House, the Senate Majority Leader, the President himself, espouse policies containing the most abhorrent abominations before God for this country, and then cavalierly pronounce, "God bless America." What vanity.
Associating the Name of God with vanity happens in politics, government, sports, entertainment and, in the greatest affront to God, in the church. When men teach their own doctrines and ideas as though they are the commandments of God, Jesus says, "they make my Word of no effect." (Matthew 15:6-9; Mark 7:13). When Joel Osteen, Rick Warren, Robert Shuler, and even back to Norman Peale, and many so-called Christian psychologists, add their teachings in addition to the finished work of Jesus Christ on the Cross, this is the essence of human vanity and God will not be a part of it. There is overwhelming vanity even in Christian music today, as concepts are put forth that are in opposition and competition to the finished work of Christ.
This to me explains what constitutes a violation of the Third Commandment. We as Christians are as guilty, if not more so, than the guy on the street or in our schools or offices, who doesn't know Christ, spewing out a few expletives.
Many churches now open their doors for the express purpose of teaching doctrines that either add to or subtract from Christ's finished work on the Cross, and then lift a vain plea to the heavens, "God bless our church and God bless America."
Vanity, vanity all is vanity. Don't look for God to advance or suffer our self-indulgences by attaching His Name to them - that's taking His Name in vain.
